Dometic Introduces Worlds First Inflatable Winter Awning
As caravanners ourselves, we set up Horton Common with all the features and services we would want on our ideal small caravan site.
As such, we made sure that Horton Common had a wide entrance and that the gate to the site was set back 18m.
However, we do have a gate to Horton Common, which also has a code lock. Guests are provided with the code to open the gate upon booking.
Olpro Hive Campervan Awning (fibreglass Poles)
We raised the CDP emptying point to be as easy to use as possible. The fencing provides privacy and shelter from the wind.
We have received many positive comments from our guests over the years on how easy our CDP at Horton Common is to use.
We have a defibrillator installed on-site, which is part of a local network. You can read more about this AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in this post.

I've started a new website about electric tow cars which you may want to check out to see what your options are/will be for towing a caravan with an electric car.

The large tent manufacturers offer a variety of awnings to provide not only shelter but also worthwhile living space for use as a sun lounge, bedroom, utility space or even a shower room. Just like when choosing your motorhome, choosing the right awning is all about how you camp, what you need and what your ’van can take in terms of weight and payload and storage space; plus, there’s your budget, too. Campervan owners probably have the greatest needs but they also have the greatest limitations on storage space. The good thing is campervans are well catered for by large manufacturers as well as specialist suppliers. What is a wind-out awning? Wind-out awnings are essentially a canopy rolled up inside a cassette, permanently mounted on the side or roof of the motorhome or campervan and wound out manually by a cranked handle or by 12V motor. Extending support legs are contained within the cassette and dropped down (and pegged) when the canopy is fully extended. These awnings, made by companies such as Thule, Fiamma and Dometic, are probably the most common type. Fiamma and Dometic also offer a self-supporting canopy (no need to lower legs or peg out). These are useful for disabled campers and those always on the move. Self-supporting models with 12V motors and a wind sensor fitted mean you can go to bed at night not worrying: the wind sensor automatically retracts the canopy when winds reach a certain strength. The downside is any kit left out may get wet. Buying Your First Motorhome, the 2022 edition is available now, including everything you need to know about your first motorhome, with essential guides, top tips and buying advice available to buy here The main positive with wind-outs is that no space is used up, although they do add 20kg to 50kg of weight depending on size and specification. User instructions indicate these awnings are more for sun shading rather than weatherproof shelters. Additional struts can be fitted and storm straps for tie-down canopies with supporting legs, but it’s up to the user to decide when to wind the canopy in before the weather becomes too inclement. Never leave a wind-out awning unattended for a long period in case severe weather blows up. Side and front walls are available, which enclose the space and create a sturdy, largely weatherproof awning. Side panels and the extra roof poles required do add extra weight and storage requirements. If extra sun screening’s required rather than a full enclosure there are lightweight front sun screen panels available for most wind-out awnings. Another possibility is to deploy a mesh screen, like those from Lillypad Leisure. These are ultra-light and fold up to a compact size compared to the heavy and bulky sides and poles of a full awning room. Almost any motorhome can be fitted with a wind-out awning, although advice should be sought with regard to self-supporting awnings because of the greater strain on the wall or roof mounting. Fitting is a professional job. Coachbuilts must have a spreader plate on the fixing to ensure the internal wall is not overloaded and self-supporting awnings have a continuous mounting bracket to further spread the load. Lightweight canopies for campervans Lightweight canopies are ideal for small campervans as they give shelter without the weight or price of a wind-out cassette. They need to be stored but they fold down to a compact size and prices start from under £100. You normally need a mounting rail on the campervan that accepts a canopy bead edging. Such rails are common for attaching awnings. If you don’t want to drill your campervan's roof, rail fixing may be possible into roof rail bolt sockets or directly to roof rails, if fitted. Full awnings for motorhomes and campervans Full awnings are awnings with three or four sides rather than in the caravan sense of covering the full body of the unit. There are a huge variety of awning types in different materials, large and small, with alignment alongside or at right angles to the vehicle. You can also get a free-standing tent pitched adjacent to your motorhome or campervan, but the most suitable for British weather is an awning that attaches to the ’van. A drive-away awning is best as it provides fully weatherproof access from the motorhome via a fabric tunnel but with ease of disconnection and connection when driving out for the day. Specialist awnings on the market Outdoor Revolution makes useful utility tents, either the free-standing or drive-away type. They’re inexpensive and great for just storing general camping kit or for use as a toilet or shower room. Khyam makes an excellent tailgate awning, which is ideal for campervans with rear doors and can provide additional living space at the rear in addition to a main side awning. There are also numerous specialist companies, like Outhaus and Dubpod, which produce awnings for campervans from a simple sun shade to a roof tent or a glamping bell tent awning with wood-burning stove. How to attach an awning to your motorhome or campervan The most popular method of attachment is using a ‘C’ mounting rail on your ’van into which a bead (or Kador) strip on the edge of your awning or canopy can slide. To make driving away for the day easier, you use a figure of eight adapter to connect a double-edged Kador strip fitted in the ’van mounting rail to the beaded edge of the awning tunnel. Bead sizes vary but double-edged Kador strip adapters are available. Many wind-out canopy cassettes have an integral Kador channel along the leading edge of the cassette, which can be used for a full awning or a simple sun shade. Alternatively, strap fixing is possible: tie-down straps or guy ropes from the tunnel fabric are thrown
