Are you in the market for Mazda Bongo awnings? Find out how to choose an awning for your Mazda Bongo awning. As soon as we bought our Mazda Bongo campervan, we knew we needed an awning as our van is only partly converted (pop-top but no fitted kitchen). There are lots of different awnings on the market for campervans but most are marketed to VW campervans since they dominate the market many of them fit a Mazda Bongo perfectly though.
We love our unconverted Mazda Bongo campervan but we also love the extra space an awning provides for longer trips. If we are only camping for 1 or 2 nights, we use a *2 man pop up tent to store our children’s car seats and all the other bits we can’t fit in the van at night).
A simple sun awning would be a great addition if you don’t want extra storage space. They quickly create shelter and shade. We don’t currently have one but it is something that I’m considering as I can see the benefits of for short, summer trips.
Awnings For Mazda Bongo
An awning is fantastic for creating extra space. We find it useful for storing things, setting up a camp kitchen, somewhere for the kids to play if the weather isn’t good and it can even provide extra sleeping space if you need it to.
A drive away awning is fantastic for saving your pitch whilst you go out for the day and you can leave behind things that you don’t need during your day out, freeing up space in your campervan.
Firstly you need to think about what you want your awning to be used for. Is it just for extra space and storage or do you need extra sleeping space? If you want extra sleeping space, you might want to find an awning with a blackout sleeping section. If like us, it’s just extra space, a simple, one-room awning will do.

Think about the pack size and how it will fit in your van when you are travelling. Ours fits neatly, stood on its side in our boot when we are travelling to our campsite. A much bigger awning wouldn’t fit so easily.
How long are you prepared to spend pitching and packing away your awning? A simple, small awning will take less time to put up and take down than a bigger awning.
Do you want your awning on the side of your van or on the tailgate? Both of these options have pros and cons. We chose a side awning and I’m happy with our choice. We can access the van straight from the awning which we wouldn’t be able to do with a tailgate. I also feel the side awning helps us to fit into camping pitches much better and it doesn’t block the view from the tailgate. I love being able to look out of the back window or even having the tailgate up in summer.

For the past 18 months, we have been using * this one and we love it. It is quick to put up and put away. It gives us the extra space we need and we love that there is a door on all sides, so we can open the door that we choose based on the pitch we are parked on. We have an imported Mazda Bongo with an aftermarket pop-top roof fitted. There is a sill or rail above the sliding door that we attach a * figure of 8 attachment to that connects at one side to the van and the other side to the awning. It does take a few attempts to attach as it can be a bit stiff to attach to the sill/rail but you soon find the best way of fitting it and learn to use some force to get it on the rail.

Sun canopies are quick to put up and create shade and shelter at the side of your van. They don’t create any extra storage space or sleeping space though. They also don’t create shelter from heavy rain.
The * Sunncamp Universal Sun Canopy 240, uses dual beading to fit onto your Mazda Bongo Camper using a fitted rail. It takes approximately 10 mins to fit and once up it covers an area of 240 x 218cm. Pack size 65 x 10 x 10cm and weighs 3.4kg.
If you’re looking for a simple canopy with a bit of a retro feel, you’ll love the * OLPRO orange & brown campervan canopy. It fits all campervans, directly on to awning rails or with a figure of 8 attachment to gutter rails.
Bongo Campervan Awning Options
It takes approximately 10 minutes to put up and is 260 x 260 cm. Pack size is 70cm x 15cm x 15cm and it weighs 6kg.
We love taking our drive-away awning on any trip of 3 plus nights. We love the extra space for storing things so the van doesn’t feel overcrowded, setting up a camp kitchen in it and generally just having more living space. As I mentioned above, think about how big you need your awning to be, if you want one space or separate rooms and whether you want poles or inflatable. The awnings below are the ones I have seen recommended frequently for Bongos.
We bought the * OLPRO Cubo drive away awning 18 months ago and we love it. It takes us about 20 minutes to put it up and less to take it down. My husband can pretty much put it up on his own if he needs to too. Its a simple square awning with no separate rooms and is perfect for creating extra space.
Choosing An Awning For Mazda Bongo
There is a door on all 4 sides which gives us so much flexibility depending on how we pitch the van and awning. It has a sewn-in groundsheet which I personally prefer.
