The main concern I'd have would be height, as mounting the awning directly off the factory rack won't give you much clearance. My rig is lifted 2", has bigger tires, a roof rack mounted on top of the factory rack, and aftermarket mounts that further raise the awning above the height of the rack, and my head still barely scrapes the edge of the awning (I'm 6').

I have a free standing shade shelter but as noted in another post, it takes up a lot of space in my pod and is a hassle to set up.

Better still, a good quality camping/hiking sil-nylon tarp will weigh and pack down next to nothing and can do double duty, working both on and off the car. If you know a couple of knots and have a couple of adjustable tarp poles, the set up won't take long at all.
