At 4x4 Awnings we’ve looked at a few interesting products recently, with some innovative designs and features. There’s a lot to be said for a good basic side awning, however, and that’s what most of the market consists of. We’ve been looking at an awning from off road specialist TJM, which is aimed squarely at this segment.
TJM’s standard awning is 2 metres wide and extends 2.1 metres out from the vehicle. It’s made from PVC-coated polyester fabric, which is pretty sturdy and completely waterproof. It also gives near total protection from UV light. The support structure is conventional. You get two aluminium extrusions for the base and end bar, and side struts and legs made from telescoping aluminium tubes. There aren’t any surprises here but everything seems well enough made and reasonably sturdy. The edges are reinforced and all the stitching looks fine. Fitting it is straightforward too; the base mounts to your roof cage or bars using the supplied bolts and mounting brackets.
If you’ve set up awnings before you won’t have any trouble with this one. It all zips away for stowage in a tough nylon reinforced PVC bag. Just unzip the bag, unfold the side struts and stretch the awning out. The struts lock into the end bar, the legs fold down and that’s pretty much it. There are also Velcro straps along the sides to you can secure the awning to the struts and keep it nice and tight. If there’s a bit of wind the supplied guy lines and pegs will hold things in place for you.

TJM sell a range of tents and that’s their main solution for sleeping in, so the awning is a no frills affair. There aren’t tent walls or mosquito nets available for it right now, so if you like a bit of extra comfort when you’re sleeping this is more suitable for just sitting in the shade and relaxing. Of course if you don’t mind roughing it a bit you certainly can sleep under it; there’s room, and with it on the downwind side of your vehicle you’d be fine. As a basic shelter it does its job pretty well.
This is a classic simple awning without any special features or expansion options, and that may not be what you’re looking for. If it is, though, we don’t think you’d go far wrong with the TJM. It’s solid and well made, and it’s definitely capable of keeping you sheltered from the sun or wet weather. If you want a basic awning it’s worth considering.We’re a big fan of awnings (obviously) and one of the things we like so much is their versatility. You can probably guess we were pretty interested when we found that Powerful 4x4 are selling their Kalahari awning complete with a tent kit, and we decided to try one out.
The Kalahari awning is available in three sizes – there’s a 1.4 x 2 metre one that’s ideal for mounting at the rear of your 4wd, and a pair of side-mounted 2.5 x 2 metre ones, so you can have the longer dimension along your vehicle or extending out from it. Right now the 2.5 metre wide model is available with tent for the same price as the tent on its own usually sells for, so if you’re in the market for both this might interest you.

If you’re after something radically different the Kalahari isn’t for you. This is a conventional awning with no surprises. It’s a sturdy one though. The material is heavy duty ripstop canvas that seems pretty waterproof and the frame is the usual aluminium tubes. We didn’t have any complaints about the build quality or stitching, although it wasn’t quite as neat as some we’ve seen recently. The tent is a heavier version of the same fabric – apart from the floor, which looks like vinyl - and again is well made.
Setting up follows the usual pattern and can easily be done in a couple of minutes. The whole thing stows away in a heavy PVC bag, which you just unzip and swing out the side struts. Unroll the awning, fit the end bar over the struts and lower the legs – which as usual are adjustable for length - and you’re done. The tent can be clipped to the frame in about two minutes more. If you already have a 2.5 by 2 metre awning the tent will fit to that, too; it’s been designed to suit most awnings that size. It’s available separately from Powerful 4x4, but to be honest the complete package is a more attractive deal. Who says you can only have one awning anyway?
The Kalahari awning doesn’t have any special features that make it stand out, but it’s a good enough basic awning and the tent bundle is attractive. If you’re looking for a complete solution to give you a versatile setup it could be just what you’re looking for.One of the more common accessories I see on 4WD’s today are side and rear awnings. 4WD awnings are designed for protecting you from the weather. They are very quick to set up, and as a result give you almost instant shade when you need it. Not only do they protect you from the sun, but they will protect you from the rain too (to a certain extent!).
Most awnings only take around a minute to completely set up. Unzip the bag, unclip the awning and roll it out. Fold the legs down, and then pull the other two supports out and clip them in, Strap the awning to the side supports and peg it down if required, and you are set!
On a calm day, there is no need to peg the awning down. However, I have heard of gusts of wind picking these up and flicking them. If this happens, expect a damaged awning at the least, and potentially even panel damage. I make a habit of securing mine down, purely because of the chance of it flicking. On the beach, you need sand pegs, or get a bag (the green shopping bags) and fill it up with sand, then tie the guy ropes to the bag.

A standard awning is just to protect you from the weather. If you want, you can upgrade most awnings with various accessories. Most manufacturers sell side panels (either bug proof or solid) so you can have your own little tent on the side of the vehicle.
Majority of 4WD awnings are 2m x 2m, or 2.5m x 2m. However, remember that in the case of the larger awning, the longer measurement is the length along your vehicle, not the distance that it sticks out from the vehicle.
It’s important to think about the correct awning size for your vehicle. Most 4WDs that I see on the road have the 2m x 2m ones, because they are cheaper and a better size for a lot of things. The 2.5 metre wide awning tends to be too long, and it sticks out either side of your vehicle. My 80 series Land Cruiser has a full length roof rack, which from tip to tip is only about 2.3 metres. This means you have at least 100mm of awning sticking out (on the side of your vehicle) which is likely to get caught on stray branches. On a lot of vehicles, a 2.5 metre awning sticks out even further.

However, I have said previously that a 2.5 metre awning would be better when it comes to actually sitting under it. A 2 metre one allows for you to sit under with 2 people and a table comfortably, but if it really rains down hard then you are likely to get a bit wet. At the end of the day, measure your roof racks and decide what is going to suit the best before you commit!
It took me around an hour to mount my awning; they are really simple. Majority of the awnings come with a piece of aluminium that bolts to your roof racks. They come with bolts (6 or 8) which are used to fasten it in place. Make sure that these are stainless steel, with nyloc nuts; you don’t want them to rust, or come undone. The head of the bolt slides into the aluminium piece, and bolts through your roof racks. Some come with angles to mount the awnings on, but you may find you don’t need them.
In my case, I just measured where the awning would sit, and then marked the holes (8 of). Make sure that all of the holes are level, or you will have real issues getting the bolts to go through properly. The bolts supplied with my kit were 6mm, and I drilled 6.5mm holes.
