I have advised people to seal leaks in the past with silicon However, I now advise strongly against this. I felt around the silicon today and it was obvious that it was soft underneath. So I started peeling back the silicon and discovered the rust has dramatically accelerated beneath it. There is now a big hole I can stick my fingers through that I will need to cut out. This is going to be big money or lots of work or both. First I have to remove all that silicon and the rust particles. This is seriously not good. Not the end of the world, but not good either. I am going to see if I can borrow a mate’s angle grinder and grind this all out and then replace the steele with aluminium. It is at least not as bad as it looks. A lot of that is silicon needed to be peeled away.
